The new food I tried today is the popular Taiwan street food Fish Balls. They were very chewy and hot. They were shaped like a meat ball and had a fishy flavor. They weren’t my favorite but I would try again….

I tried a Sirloin steak. It smelled really good, it smelled like really good smoked meat. It tasted pretty spicy because of the sauce on it. The sauce was pretty spicy. The meat was pretty chewy since I ordered medium rare, but it still tasted really good. It looked really good. As soon as the waiter brought the food out you could tell that the sirloin steak was going to be very good. We had the steak with rice and some garlic bread.

I had a great strawberry smoothie that was cold and had a watery sand-like texture. I guess I tasted sweet with a hint of lemon. It was a light pink/red color. It smelled kind of funny though, it’s kind of hard to explain. Almost a jolly rancher scent, but it didn’t taste artificial thankfully.

One new food I tried while in Taiwan was sweet potato balls. I got those at the night market. I didn’t think I was going to like them, but they were actually very good and had a good texture. Our night teacher bought them for us on the first night market that we went to because we couldn’t decide on what to eat. I am glad that I tried then and I am looking forward to having them again.

One new food I tried at the night market was bubble tea. The bubble tea was in a medium sized bottle, also containing this plastic wrap over the top. You couldn’t really see the color of the tea or boba, but you could see a whitish yellow tint color through the straw. The tea tasted very good, I got this recommended flavor from one of the Chinese chaperones. I think it was normal milk tea, because it tasted like black tea, but with a whitish and creamier taste. The smell tasted just like black tea, smelled a bit bitter, but fruity in a way. The texture of the tea was pretty smooth, and wasn’t hard to drink down at all. All the boba was squishy and chewy. The boba didn’t have a distinct taste, but gave chewiness to the drink.
During my time in Taiwan, I got to talk to a lot of different people, from the markets, 7/11, or the museums. I noticed that all of these people are very respectful and kind. They noticed that we weren’t from here, and welcomed us without any bad intent. They knew we didn’t fully understand everything, and reached out to help. It made me feel very happy and comfortable. Because going into a new environment, I was pretty nervous, but others welcoming me, helping me made me feel relieved. When I go back to America, this influence from these people will change how I look at things. I now have experience of being in others’ shoes, knowing of not being fully comfortable. So I would like to welcome, make them feel at least a bit better. Make them not out of place and special in their own way. Help them out if needed and guide them.
